Phra Thad Bang Phuan is the oldest pagoda
and most important in Nong Khai province and in
the Northeast. It is situated at Ban Phra That
Bang, Muang district in Nong Khai.
The archaeological survey found that this
Phra Thad Bang Phuan was constructed for quiet
long time by the king Phra Chao Phothisala, the
king of the Lan Chang Kingdom. According to the
epigraph on the base of the four Buddha images
that were found there told the year 2118, 2150,
2158 and 2167 in each base of the Buddha image.

Phra Thad Bang Phuan is the square pagoda
that called Phra Chedi Srisata Mahadhana in the
stone inscription. In this temple, there are
three Viharns, one chapel and the ancient pond.
Besides, there are many interesting places such
as Satta Mahasattharn that is the places about
the Buddhas life which are in 3 places namely
Myanmar, Wat Chet Yot (Chiang Mai) and here, Wat
Phra Thad Bang Phuan.
Bodhi Banlang
It is the seat under the Bodhi tree that
the Buddha took meditation before his
enlightenment. According to the Tipitaka, the
main scripture in Buddhism says that the Lord
Buddha sat here for 7 days for consider about
the things or Dhammas that he enlightened.
Phra Animmis Chedi
It is Located in the northeast of the
Bodhi Banlang and is the square pagoda. After
the Buddha enlightenment, he went to stay here
for 7 days too.
Phra Rattana Chedi
This is the place that the Buddha went to
stay next the Phra Animmis Chedi and waling
meditation here for 7 days and consider the
people who can understand his teachings.
Phra Rattana Khara Chedi
At the Bodha Gaya in India, it is located
in northwest of the Bodhi tree but in this
temple, Wat Phra Thad Bang Phuan, it is located
in the west. It is a square pagoda. This is the
place that the Lord Buddha came to stay and
analyze the highest teachings, Abhimma for 7
days.
Phra Acha Pala Nikrot Chedi
According to the Tipitaka says that the
Buddha stayed here for 7 days, he answered a
Brahmin questions and took meditation here too.

Phra Muchalin Chedi
It
is located in the southeast of the temple near
the pond. According to the Buddhist scripture,
the Buddha came to stay here after his
enlightenment three weeks. During staying here,
it was rain all time so there was a Naga came
out to protect him from the rain and storm. So
the Muchalin Chedi at this temple, there are a
posture of the pagoda with the big snake or Naga
above his head.

Phra Rajayatana Chedi
It is a place that the Buddha stayed in
the fourth week after his enlightenment and met
with two traders, Tapusa and Phanlika. They
offered foods to him and listened the teachings
from the Buddha. At last, they beg to be the
first lay Buddhist who goes for refuge to the
Buddha and Dharma.

Phra Thad Bang Phuan was built since the
Lan Chang Kingdom period and has been restored a
few time later but it collapsed on 21 June 2513.
Then, the Fine Arts Department restored it again
and the king and the queen came to be the
president in the celebration ceremony on 27
November 2521. So in the third full moon month,
there is the fair for paying respect to the
pagoda for 5 days and 5 nights in each year.
