Phi Ta Khon is a
well-blended event between
making merit, having a party,
and reenacting the long-relayed
folklore of King Vessandorn, the
Buddha-to-be reincarnation.
The Phi Ta Khon
Festival is held in Dan Sai
district of Loei province. It is
part of a Buddhist merit-making
holiday known locally as Bun
Pha Ves.
The accurate
origin of the festival is still
unclear, but it is believed that
it is concerned with an
important tale of the Buddha's
last life before reaching
nirvana.
The festival is
held with the arrival of the
sixth or seventh lunar month.
Young male villagers prepare
their ghostly costume and masks,
while children go around town
playing tricks.
Strips of cloth
are sewn together to look like
shrouds while traditional wooden
bamboo containers used to store
sticky rice are creatively
turned into strange hats. The
huge masks are carved of coconut
trees.
These spirit
masks are the significant part
of the celebrations, which last
for three days.or three days.
