Phrathud Nompa the one and only Buddha natural wonder in the world
There are many natural resources to be seen on the way Sun Kampang-Mae-On, which we will see the cave at Mae-On city. This the nature made relic of Buddha, respected by all people and the famous monk of Lanna Kruba Srivichai used this cave as the sanctuary to meditate.
Mae-On is a small city or the district in the east of Chiang Mai, we go by highway 1006, and then to # 1317. It is in Ban Sahakorn, mostly mountain area. The cave used to be called Doi Sila Cave, that is a big cave in the mountain. There are many layers of rocks in the cave and the relic of Buddha is in the center of the cave with difference color of rocks. Inside the statue contains the hair of Buddha called Phrathud Nompha. The wonder is that it is nature made, and it is not man made as somewhere else.
There are many Buddha statues in various forms, and nature made rock in the form of many animals and yoga meditating position.
The legend had it that Buddha and his disciples passed by Hari-punchai (Lumphun) and dwelled at this cave. The big snake Naga stayed and guarded this cave saw Buddha staying in the cave. He then disguised as human being and brought fruits and honey to pay homage to Buddha. Then Buddha blessed the Naga, and Naga asked for the hair of Buddha and put in Phrathud Nompha until present time.
Mueang-On cave was the meditation place for famous Kruba Srivichai of Lanna, the one that built the way up the mountain to Wat Phrathud Doi Suthep in BE.2473 (1930) He also asked people to built the way to the cave and built the Buddha statue called Thanjai (immediately) in 1 day, and the statue is still in the cave. He changed the name from Doi Sila to Mueang-On Cave, we can see his statue with his relic in this tranquil cave.
There is parking lot for visitors, place is high up on the hill at the Naga stairway around hundred steps to the top. There are big trees, cool and scenic on the stair up, view of the city can be seen on the way up the cave.
Bring your flashlight with you to see inside the cave, another alternative is renting the flash light in front of the cave. In the cave is a big place with nice looking rocks when the light strike in the cave. The small passage to the first hall for Yoga to meditate, then the stair down to the main hall. The big place with many forms of shiny rocks, and Phrathud Nompa is in this hall.
Phrathud is in the middle of the cave, made by nature and the lion guarded the statue, also nature made. Not far away is sand hill where Kruba Srivichai used to stay during his time.
Muenag-On Cave is on the way to hot spring of San Kampheng, umbrella making at Bor-sang village, and to Phrathud Doi Suthep in one day.
Mueang-On Cave is in Sahakorn village. Information at Tel.053-929-029. Using highway Chiang Mai Sun Kamphang, then to Mae-On for 17 km. turn left for 1.5 km. to the cave. It is one and only wonder nature made in Buddhism.
