Loy Krathong Festival
Loi
krathong or called by
the natives of Chiangmai
Yi Peng is the
traditional of people
who live near the river
to pay respect to the
river guardian and make
apologies for wrongs
that they may had
committed to the rive0r
People use banana leaves
and other natural
materials to make basket
like lotus shaped cups which
is called in Thai Krathong.
They light candles then
float (loi) them along
the river. Areas that
are far from the river,
people use a lenten balloon
to float in the air
instead.
However, the highlights
of the Yi Peng
festival is the female
of the Krathong
competition with Beauty
Queen sitting in them.

The
competition in 2009 was
held on November 13 with
over 30 entries of
Krathongs competing for
H.M. Queen Sirikit
trophies

When you are
there you feel the touch
of Lanna atmosphere ,
hearing people speaking
the Lanna dialect ,
dressed in their special
and beautiful costumes,
both men and women. It
is really something
spectacular an
unforgettable
experience.
The entries are
from various government
and organization as well
as from private sectors.
This year
festivals draw huge
crowds both Thai and
foreigners from all over
the world. Loy
krathong Festival is
really something very
special in Chiangmai.
If you have not
experienced this
wonderful event, dont
miss to come during this
time of the year.
