Rafflesia kerriis found in the Khao Sok National Park was named after A.F.G. Kerr, the Irish botanist who discovered the gigantic flower in 1929. It is also provincial symbolic flower of Surat Thani.
Many Rafflesia kerriis are usually found in the same area. The largest one is 80 centimetres, though they usually have an average size of 55-56 centimetres.
Today, there is only place in Thailand to see the
flower. It is at the kilometer marker 111. Tourists have to climb a
steep hill for 3 kilometers to reach the spot. There are 2 spots
that the Rafflesia kerriis grow. The 2 spots are about 200 metres
away from one another, and the first spot has more Rafflesia kerriis
than the second spot.
The best time to visit the Khao Sok
National Park is from December to May.
